With Valentine’s day just around the corner, conversation hearts and big pink and red chocolate boxes on every shelf you see, it really gets you in the mood for LOVE!
But, how to you capture love in a photo? Whether your a professional photographer or just looking to take some lovely pictures of your own family, what are the things you can do to make sure you capture that feeling on camera.
Let?s start out by stating the obvious (well…maybe to some of you) . ?If you stand back with your camera a say Ok, show me love!, most people (young and old) are going to stare back at you with a blank face, either that ?OR awkwardly lean in to one another knowing that someone is watching them and try to show love. Either way- doesn’t equal a great photo
.

So what can YOU do as the photographer (professional or amateur) to evoke that fantastic feeling of love! Keep reading for a few tips you can try to capture LOVE in your photos this season (or anytime of the year!)
Â
With Children
- Have them share secrets with one another.
- Just ask them to put their arms around each other. Then ask them to look at one another . (If they still look uncomfortable tell them whoever gets the other one to laugh first is the winner!)
- Have them kiss a cheek, hair, hands ( This especially works with with a much younger/older sibling duo or with a child and parent)
- Tickle fight!
With Families
- Get the family close, putting dad in the back. Ask dad to hug his whole family in as tight as he can.
- Just ask them to look at one another. Count to three and tell them to pick someone to look at when you reach 3.
- Get a tickle fight going (again). Ask them kids to first tickle each other- then mom- then dad.
- Have everyone kiss the youngest child…at the same time!
With Couples
- Have the guy place his hands on the woman’s cheeks. Then ask him to bring her in for a kiss.Â
- Have him smell her hair.
- Bring them in close. Have them close their eyes and remember the first time they met.
- Ask him to whisper in her ear.
- Ask them to hold hands and go for a short stroll.

Thank you so much for these awesome tips! My first family photo session was a tough one, I felt like the parents were trying to be very serious and keep the kids from running around… I’m excited to give your pointers a try, encourage the kids to run around and let the parents know they are free to be silly as well!
My spouse engages the family front on and I work my way around capturing shots of them from different angles. I take pictures of the children watching/playing with her and of the parents watching the children.
