Fun Activities for Kids- Phoenix Children’s Photographer

I’m excited to introduce a new section on my blog which relates not only to photography, but also to kids!  Some of you may not know this but in addition to being a family and child photographer I am also a mom to four young kids.  And, when I am not watching my little one or taking photos, I’m also a part time child development professor.  I’ve spent many years working with young children and though it would be fun to incorporate some of my expertise in this area into my blog! Several times a month I will be sharing some fun activities to do with your children after school or during their summer vacation.  Using some personal examples of my own along with my camera, I hope to give you some ideas of things to do with your kids!

MAKING LEMONADE

Children are very sensory oriented and love to touch, taste, smell and feel. This is one of the reasons they are so curious about the kitchen.   While this sounds like a simple activity, it is actually full of learning opportunities. It’s also cheap and fun. Making lemonde together is a great activity that incorporates not only sensory experiences but so much more.Children's portriat photography in phoenix and ahwatukeeTHE INGREDIENTS

Lemonade is so simple because it only requires 3 ingredients: lemons, sugar and water.  Have your children help you locate these three things around your kitchen or better yet, take them to the grocery store and have them find them.  This helps them with spatial skills and understanding where things are at.

Write the recipe out and allow your children to measure the sugar and water.  For older children, you can even introduce simple fractions when you pour out a half a cup of sugar or a whole cup.  Your can extend the fraction lesson when you cut the lemon into two pieces, again showing the wholes vs. halves.  While stirring the lemonade, have the children count aloud to 10 or higher, practicing their counting skills.Lessons for children during the summer in Phoneixmaking lemonade incorporates math and learningSOCIAL SKILLS

If you have more than one child (like I do), nothing beats a learning opportunity for turn taking.  This is a huge skill that children need lots of practice with.  Allow the children their turn but also keep reminding them to be patient and wait for their brother and sister.  Here, each of my girls counted for the other one as we added the lemon slices into the pitcher.

Most children enjoy doing things over and over again (have you noticed they chose the same book for you to read night after night 🙂 )  Because of that, they’ll probably want to  make lemonade with you again on a different occasion, so change it up a little bit!

On this afternoon, we added food coloring to make the lemonade pink.  We incorporated science by making a hypothesis about what they thought might happen when we added red food coloring.  You could really make it any color, or try adding different types of fruit to it.  Put in strawberries or raspberries and have a taste test.  Make a graph of who likes which kind the best and compare.

If you are feeling really adventurous, talk to your kids about economics and set up a simple lemonade stand!  There is really a lot you can do by just simply making lemonade.

And as a technology extension, play some kids culinary games online! Here are a few fun ones.

Thanks for reading.  I love being a photographer, but also love being a mom too.  I hope that you’ll find my ideas helpful and useful and check back in soon for more posts on fun activities to do with your kids.

I think that some of the best childhood memories come from doing these simple activities. These images have such a wonderfully nostalgic feel to them. Your family photography is always beautiful and I love the documentary style of this series. Beautiful.ReplyCancel
