How To Easily Create Symmetry In Photoshop : Editing Tip Tuesday

For this editing tip Tuesday, Angeline Joey Buckely from S & J Photography is teaching you how to create symmetry and add some cool effects in your photos using layers and masking in Photoshop. Keep reading to learn how and watch below as I apply this technique to my own work!

You can use this technique to give your images more symmetry, but doing this can also do much more! Following these steps can add some extra effects to your images without using an overlay. It can also cover up an object from the other side of your photo.

This technique is done using Photoshop, mostly on portrait work and only as needed.

First, make a duplicate layer of the background layer.

Next, use the transform tool to flip it vertically or horizontally ( however the images are). (Find it by going to the upper left side and choosing EDIT>Transform>then either flip horizontal or vertical)

Then, add a masking layer to the duplicate layer and press Control and I to invert the masking layer (this will turn that layer mask from a white rectangle, like below to black).

Finally, you then can use a white soft brush and brush on whatever you want from the original image to the other side of your images. This could be grass or something else from the original photo.

*Note* You can change the opacity to make it look lighter or leave it at 100% to cover the entire part you would like to do on.

And there you have it! You give it a try and see what you can create on your images using layers and masking!

Watch me below as I try out this technique!
