How To Easily Shoot Light and Airy Photos that Look Gorgeous!

Light and airy photos are a beautiful style of photography that is achieved in camera. It’s not just an editing style- but a shooting style as well, and many photographers fail to understand this!? It’s also very popular now and you might be wondering just HOW you can take light and airy photos too!

Watch below to learn.

Wardrobe Choices

This is a big one. To really get your photos looking light and airy, your subject needs to be wearing something that is well…light and airy. Pastel colors, whites or light colors will look the best for shooting this light of look. Deep, dark and bold colors will not work well if light and airy is the look you are going for. If your clients are requesting a style like this, advise them ahead of time what to wear. Notice in the video above, the girl is in a very light pink dress.

Lighting

This is also extremely important. To get light and airy photos you must have (you guessed it) light! Make sure your background and foreground are both well light. Backlighting is a great way to achieve this look. ( Not sure How to Backlight a Photo Learn how here) Having open sky in your background and light in front of your subject as well will help you achieve this style of photo in camera.

Camera Settings

Shoot wide. Make sure you aperture is set at about 3.5 or wider( that will mean an f stop lower than 3.5). This will let a lot of extra light into the photo. Once that is set, slightly overexposed your photo too. This will bring in the airiness.

Hello Emily – this is really helpful.  I have been asked to shoot some photos of 2 little ones (children of a work colleague) and I am very keen to avoid shadows on their faces.  I am an amateur photographer and have been learning and participating in various work shops within my small community but have very little experience at portraits of kids.  I will be using a lens with an aperture as wide as 1.4 but I do know to take care with the focus point as 2 faces next to each can easily have one out of focus.  Do you have any other hints that I should consider?

      Hi Noelia!
Let me try to help you trouble shoot. First, these work best in the most updated version of Photoshop Cc. If you are using an older version, all of them may not work. Next, if you are up to date, once in awhile PS doesn’t load them all correctly(even if it looks like it did). Just delete and reload and usually that does the trick!ReplyCancel
