How to Realistically Start A Photography Biz AND Be An Awesome Stay At Home Mom

You’ve decided to make the leap into the business world of photography (yay!) Things are about to get a whole lot more interesting. It’s easy to think that starting your own portrait biz is a great idea if you’re a stay at home mom or taking care of a new baby. Seems easy, right? Schedule a session for an hour, come home and edit at your own time. Easy peasy, you can totally do it with your kids at home.

That seems so ideal, but it’s far from realistic. Yeah, maybe if you’re interested in just doing it on the side to earn some Starbucks money every now and then that’s a good business plan. But if you are truly serious about taking it the next level, you need to put yourself in that business mind frame.

The problem with the above business plan is that it’s not that easy. Parenting is a full time gig (I know, I’ve got 4 kiddos). And guess what, a photography company is too. Trying to do both simultaneously is hard!

To truly make your photo biz dream a reality, you?ll have to plan your ?business time. And it’s perfectly fine if you want to do it part time. Don’t try to create and run a business while also trying to play with your kids, help them with their homework and get the laundry done. One of them will have to give (and I’d hope it’s not the kids).

You will be so much more successful if you go into it from the get go with an entrepreneur mind set. Don’t think of it as a pretend business or something that your just tinkering around with. Set business hours and stick with them. (this might mean hiring a babysitter or having the grandparents over for a bit). During this time have a plan. This is the time to answer emails, post on social media or work on your editing. Then when work hours are done, go back to being a parent.

The trouble is most parents try to get in little bits of work time here and there. You’ll get frustrated if you start to work on a task because you think it?s quiet in the house only to be interrupted minutes later when you need to regulate a sibling argument. Your kids will get frustrated too trying to get your attention.

In closing, if you are REALLY looking to start a biz (even if it’s just a few hours a week at the beginning)and you’ve got kids at home, you need to do the following to be successful:

  • Plan your business hours
  • hire a sitter for the kids (even if you’re at home!)
  • keep an entrepreneur mind set
  • and finally don’t try to “sneak in” work

You’ve got this! Get out there and do it! Be the best parent and business owner out there!

And tell us in a comment below, is there something that YOU do that has helped you mange your time in running your photography business and being a great parent?
