How To Use The Clone Tool To Retouch Skin In Portraits: Editing Tip Tuesday

On today’s editing tip Tuesday, Lia Lo with Lie-Lo Photography teaches you how to use the clone stamp tool in Photoshop to retouch skin. The clone stamp tool is a super easy, yet effective way to retouch in Photoshop!

I’ve followed Lia’s work for a long time now and LOVE the newborn work she produces. She also resides in the Netherlands, which holds a close place in my heart. My mom’s side of the family lived there and growing up I’d spend many summers in the Netherlands.

Let’s jump right into Lia’s tutorial and learn how to use the clone stamp tool to retouch skin in Photoshop.

The Clone Stamp Tool

This tool is used mostly for newborns and portraits as needed.

First, open the portrait you would like to edit and select the clone stamp tool. (You’ll find it on the left hand tool bar, it looks like this-see below)

Next, place the cursor over an area of the skin that you want to clone (your ideal skin tone and texture) and press option (MAC) or Alt (windows) and click. This will sample that ideal skin area.

Then, place that clone stamp tool over the area of the skin you want to retouch (maybe uneven toning or blemishes) and paint on.

Finally, re- sample skin and paint on different areas as much or little as needed.

And there you have it! The more you practice with this technique the better you’ll get!
