Learn How To Take Better Portraits Using Natural Light

Learn How To Take Better Portraits Using Natural LightSo you got yourself one of those new “fancy” DSLR cameras hoping that your pictures were going to start looking awesome!

Trouble was, they didn’t.

All those buttons and dials on the camera were confusing and sometimes your photos would come out out of focus. You weren’t really sure about how to use the light to your advantage.

Let me try to help you out a bit, because great photography is so much more than just having a great camera.

1. You Need To Understand The Light

This is very important if you want your pictures to look better. Pay close attention to the light around your subject. Step back and see how the highlights and shadows fall across their face. If it looks bad to you in real life, it’s not going to look too hot in a photo either.

Use natural ligth to take better pictures. Learn how here.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Learn Manual Mode

It’s so easy just to stick your camera on automatic and leave it.Trouble is, you are limiting yourself. You can really start to do creative things once you’ve mastered manual mode (and really some of the other shooting modes your camera has to offer too!) I teach more about this in my free online workshop. You can register here for FREE!

There is nothing worse than capturing the cutest smile or the best little interaction between two siblings and the image s is OUT OF FOCUS! I’ve struggled with this before too. But there are things you can do to try and make sure that your image will be clear. One is just slowing things down. If you are shooting hand held, watch how much you are moving or shaking the camera. Even just breathing too heavy can be too much movement. ( Learn even more tips to keep images in focus in the online Boot Camp, did I mention it’s free?)

4. Find Ways to Boost your Creativity

Look for inspiration and try to think outside the box more when you are shooting portraits. Push your creativity and think differently than you usually do. You’ll end up with some really cool images! One of my best “A-ha” moments came when I thought differently about how I shot, it really changed my entire shooting style. (I not only share what it is with you in the free Photography Boot Camp, but you get to watch me in action as I shoot using this creative theory!)
