Take Gorgeous Portraits with the 135mm lens How to Take Gorgeous Portraits with the 135mm lens + A Behind the Scenes Look!

Looking for an upgrade in your lens? Maybe you’re just kinda bored with the lens you have, or maybe you’re looking for something that will just make those photos of yours look even better?

If so, I know just the lens! ?It’s been one of my absolute faves for awhile now.

Take Gorgeous Portraits with the 135mm lens

I’m not secretive about it when photographers ask me what I shoot with, most of the time it’s the 135mm 2.0 Canon. ‘(Nikon has a version too!) Let me break down the reasons why I love it so much plus give you a sneak peak into one of my sessions using the 135mm 2.0. Watch me in action below and then red through why the 135mm might be the lens for you!

Ease

While this longer focal lens is a bit long and does look kinda big, it’s actually not too and to carry around. It’s lightweight around your neck and can be carried around in a bag without feeling like you’ve got a kid or tow and your back. I do lots of hiking while I’m out shooting, so this is kinda a big deal to me. I don’t want to feeling like I’m lugging around 10 tons of equipment while I’m going uphill. (and you won’t feel that way either!)

Sharpness

The 135mm is awesome because the focus is so dang clear! (<—yeah, I said it!) It is so crisp and sharp, you will instantly noticed a difference in the way your subjects just pop right out!

(this shot was taken with the 135mm at 2.2 1/800 and ISO100- this shot was NOT edited at all. This is SOOC!)

Blurriness

Kinda the opposite of what I was just sayin’, right? While your subject will stay clear and in focus, the background of your images will be creamy and blurry (if set up correctly! Unsure how? ?I’ve got you covered right here in 4 ways to create a blurry background) One of the best features of this lens!

Price

Ok, so price I know is somewhat relative and this isn’t the cheapest of lenses BUT it’s not the most expensive either. If you are really looking to see a difference in your photos and have just under $1000 to invest. This one might be the one you want! Comparable to the wonderfully popular 200mm 2.0, this lens is about 6 times less in prices, but can give you similar results!

I just got this lens at Christmas but haven’t had good weather to use outside much yet. I’m glad to hear it will work with larger groups! I wondered why your shutter speed was so high? Because of movement? I tend to double it. Still learning all those aspects.ReplyCancel

    I am looking at a Nikon 85mm 1.8 and a Nikon 105mm 1.8. Hard to decide. ReplyCancel

Hello Emily! Well, now the 135 f2.0 is on my wish list…When I was using a crop sensor I loved my 17-55 f2.8, but now that I upgraded to the Canon 5D Mark III and mostly shoot real estate I pretty much only use my 16-28 f2.8 & my 50mm f1.4…Otherwise I rent lenses for different shoots. I am definitely checking out the 135mm! Thank you!ReplyCancel

Hello Emily, I just thought I would drop in and say hello and I read your information everytime it hits my mailbox.  This lens you speak of meaning the 135mm seems like a great lens.  I use my Canon kit long lens 55-220mm quite often and so far it seems to be my favourite…until now of course.  Having to stand further away from my subject makes up for the great photo.  I also use the uv lens protector on the outside and that seems to produce some really good results.  I also subscribe to the ” F Stoppers” site on You Tube and they have some interesting things to view there as well on a mixed bag of issues, photoshop and products.   They speak of a company that makes great lens’s and the name escapes me… I think it may start with the letter “R”…lol is that not silly or what… I will have to back and check.  This is a great time of year up here in Maple Ridge BC, Canada for some awesome fall scenes and natural backdrops.  I really like to use the fall colours as a blurred background for my subjects standing in the foreground.  Cheers Emily,  have a great week and Happy Clicking..Cheers… or Cheeze..lol  bye for now.ReplyCancel

Hi Emily! I bought the 135mm lens last year because you suggested it and I use this lens often, if I have 4 or less subjects. I also use a 50mm lens which I have had for many years, which I use with larger groups and when it gets closer to sunset. I am in the market for a Luxe lens because I am having issues with having enough light with the 50mm. I may get an 85mm………….what do you think?ReplyCancel

Hey Kara! You know I love the 85mm too (1.8) I think it’s a great middle between the 50 and 135. I just tend to use my 135 over the 85, but it’s totally a personal preference ?ReplyCancel

I use a 85mm f1.4 portrait lens on my Sony alpha 7 mark IIIr body. It really is my favourite 🙂 It’s a fast lens producing really nice bokeh.ReplyCancel
